About Virunga Mountain Spirits
Inspired by a love for the beauty, people and story of Rwanda, Virunga Mountain Spirits was born in 2021.
Our women-owned company, located at the foothills of the Virunga Mountains in Musanze, Rwanda, will operate a world-class craft distillery and farm-to-bottle agro-tourism site that expresses and elevates the spirit of Rwanda.
Surrounded by rugged volcano peaks and luscious rainforests, with close proximity to Congo and Uganda, Virunga Mountain Spirits will produce our flagship product, potato vodka, as well as other craft alcohol for the local, regional and export market.
Our products
Did you know that vodka is the fastest growing segment in the global alcohol industry and the top selling spirit in the United States? Most vodka brands are distilled from wheat or corn. Our “sipping” vodka will be distilled from potatoes, sourced from local farmer cooperatives and partners like Hollanda Fairfoods/Winnaz Crisps.
The quality of well made potato vodka is considered superior by experts. And Virunga potatoes, grown in volcanic soil, are among the best in the world. The lava rocks that surround the potato fields can be turned into natural filters, allowing the rainwater to flow from the hillsides into our distillery.
Tours and tastings, including exclusive, distillery-only vodkas infused with local fruits and botanicals, and our on-site cafe with spectacular mountain views, make Virunga Mountain Spirits a favorite hotspot.
Our approach
Virunga Mountain Spirits prides itself in using local ingredients, a sustainable production process and elevating the voices and talents of women producers and consumers. It allows us to make a premium African spirit with the story of Rwanda in every drop.
Our production employs and upskills Rwandans at every level of operations. From women near Musanze to experienced professionals, our emphasis is on creating opportunities to advance women.
